About the species

RANGE | The bald eagle lives throughout most of Canada and Alaska, all of the contiguous United States, and northern Mexico.

FUN FACTS | The Bald Eagle is the symbol of the US, although Benjamin Franklin really wanted the wild turkey. These birds became an endangered species due to the use of pesticides, which caused a lack of calcium which is needed for egg shells. They were one of the first animals added to the Endangered Species list in 1967 and eventually removed 40 years later in 2007. These birds are opportunistic feeders that primarily hunt fish, but will also prey on small mammals and reptiles, or even scavenge on carrion if food is scarce. Their name comes from the white feathers on their head—which turn fully white when they are 5 years old—from an old English word “piebald” which means “one with a white head.” Like most raptors, the females are larger than the males. A female bald eagle can have up to an eight-foot wing span, which explains why these birds have to build the largest nest of any North American bird.

Meet Liberty

Liberty was Injured by a bullet that caused permanent damage to his wing. After he spent an extensive time recovering, we became his forever home. Liberty loves new things, even if it often takes him a bit longer to interact with these items. He has a pool and especially likes water toys.

Likes

Everything ends up in his pool so toys need to durable and waterproof. Heavy duty dog toys—especially the ones made for playing in the water—are ideal for this majestic bird. Liberty uses a turtle Little Tykes pool which needs to be replaced periodically. He really likes the nylon rope balls and toys that will float. Liberty truly loves to shred anything so we use streamers and tubes that he can tear apart to his heart’s content!
