About the species

RANGE | The augur buzzard is found in eastern and southwestern Africa. Despite its erratic looking distribution, it is often common in its range. The augur buzzard is found from eastern Sudan and Ethiopia (also northern Somalia) down through the northeast of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Uganda, Kenya, parts of Tanzania into Zambia, Malawi, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, western Angola, and west-central Namibia. In these regions, they are typically found in open savannah and plains country as well as forested areas with nearby cultivation.

FUN FACTS | Augur Buzzards are found in Africa, occupying the same ecological niche as the red-tailed hawk does here in the US. Augur buzzards—also called jackal buzzards or archer buzzards—have the ability to soar for long periods of time, surveying the ground below for prey. Like all hawks, Augur buzzards are strict carnivores. They actively hunt a variety of animals—small mammals and ground birds, carrion, and particularly reptiles. When hunting, it pounces or drops on prey from a perch or hover. Though often unsuccessful, it can make very graceful controlled stoops with wings held high over the back, dropping suddenly on the prey at the last minute.

Meet Orion

This bird came to Wildmind as evidence in a case against the owner, who had been keeping him illegally—tethered on a short leash for all 13 years of his life. Neighbors became aware of this bird and his companion—a Harris hawk—when she began vocalizing a lot. The two birds were confiscated and brought to us during the hearing. We began the process of obtaining the permits needed to become their forever home.

Orion is quite shy and nervous. We are taking our time to help him adjust, to develop confidence in himself and trust in us. He is beginning to show curiosity about enrichment and getting out for walks for a regular change of scenery.

Likes

Orion is beginning to enjoy enrichment, having never experienced it before. He takes a bit of time to investigate new items, but is starting to grab small stuffed animals and shred items made with paper or hay.
